Dr Benjamin Thurston

VASCULAR SURGEON

BMBCh, MA(Oxon), MSc, FRACS(Vasc)

Ben is an Australian trained Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, specialising in both minimally invasive and open surgical procedures for arterial and venous disease. He is passionate about providing holistic patient-centered care, with a focus on a multidisciplinary team approach that balances and optimises both medical and surgical interventions – and thereby improving patients’ quality of life.

Ben has specialist interests in renal access surgery, venous surgery and the management of aortic and peripheral arterial disease. Privately he consults at The Queen Elizabeth Specialist Centre in Woodville. He operates primarily at St Andrews Hospital and has a public appointment at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Ben is a dual citizen, being brought up in the New Forest in the UK and having lived in Adelaide since 2014. He attended medical school at Oxford University (UK), coming second in the year. In 2009 he was a visiting research fellow at Harvard University (USA), and subsequently he has completed post graduate studies at both Edinburgh University (UK) and Stanford University (USA) in genomics, genetics and the optimisation of risk prediction in vascular surgical patients.

His early surgical training was in the South of the UK, becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England before moving to South Africa to work in trauma surgery in Cape Town. After moving to Australia he completed his Vascular Surgery training locally and in Perth, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2023.

In addition to his clinical practice, Ben is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and he is also completing his PhD in the imaging, epigenetics and heterogeneity of atherosclerotic arterial disease at the Vascular Research Institute, SAHMRI. Ben lives in Adelaide with his wife Natalie, who is an anaesthetist, and his four young children. Outside of work, Ben enjoys spending time with his young family and rowing on the Torrens and at West Lakes – albeit somewhat less competitively than in previous years!
